GRN ACA Level 2/Level 3 River Kayaking Instructor Certification Upgrade/Update
Includes Instructor Certification Exam (ICE)
*Prerequisites to enroll in this class:
- Must be a current ACA Member
- Must be either 1) an already certified ACA Level 1 Kayak or Level 2 River Kayak Instructor seeking to upgrade to Level 2/Level 3 River Kayaking, or 2) be an already certified Level 2/Level 3 River Kayaking Instructor seeking to update your certification
If you are already certified as an ACA Level 1 Kayak or Level 2 River Kayak Instructor and you would like to UPGRADE to Level 2/Level 3 River Kayaking Instructor, this class is for you. This class is not appropriate for new instructor candidates.
Alternatively, if you are an already certified ACA Level 2/Level 3 River Kayaking instructor and would like to UPDATE your certification, this is the class for you, as well. Please make sure you have turned in classes to the ACA Course Management System to meet the UPDATE requirement before beginning this class.
Led by Level 4 Whitewater Kayaking Instructor Trainer Francheska Hebden, you will have the opportunity to earn up to Level 3 ACA River Kayaking Instructor certification, based on your performance in the class.

Instructor Candidates can earn up to a Level 2 River Kayaking Instructor certification in this class. Certification is not guaranteed.

Instructor IDW/ICE Class Dates: June 21-23, 2024
Location: Tuckasegee River, Sylva. NC
Cost: $400 per person for tuition
*Stay with the rest of the class in the Airbnb
(Optional Add On) $100-$160 per person for 4 nights
Time: Class will convene promptly at 9 am each morning and go all day and, at the Instructor Trainer's discretion, will typically include some required working meals and evening sessions.
Additional Considerations: There are a few additional costs required by the national certifying body that are not included in the tuition for this class that candidates should consider.
- All candidates pursuing ACA instructor certification are required to be members of the American Canoe Association ($40).
- Candidates should already be certified in First Aid and CPR and have your certifications uploaded in the ACA Course Management System before starting this course.
- Candidates who successfully complete the ACA certification will be required to pay an additional Instructor dues to the ACA Safety, Education and Instruction Council (SEIC) ($30).
- You are responsible for your own room and board and transport during this class. During registration you will have the option to sign up to stay in the class Airbnb rental cabin.
Required Equipment:
- Bring your own kayak, life jacket and paddle. Since this class is on a whitewater river with features up to class II, you will be required to have a whitewater kayak with skirt and helmet for this class.
- Bring a camp chair, lunch, plenty of water, a strap for your glasses, closed toe shoes that attach at the ankles, and dress for immersion every day.
Other useful gear to bring:
Drybag, throw rope, locking carabiners, sunscreen, bug repellent, first aid kit.
